What Is the Current Player Limit?
Steam currently lists support for one to four players. Game8 reports that Version 1.0.4 increased the maximum from four to eight, while other materials and player reports do not consistently confirm that larger lobbies are available or stable in every version.
The four YouTube playthrough participants demonstrate that a four-person campaign works, including shared fights, navigation, revives, and collection clean-up. They do not test an eight-person session, so their footage cannot independently prove the new ceiling. The patch-specific source remains the basis for the eight-player answer.
A Nexus “More Players” mod also exists in the material, but it is not evidence of the current official limit. Do not tell players to install the mod merely to reach a larger lobby without verifying current compatibility.
Online Co-op, Not Split-Screen
The collected sources describe internet-based online co-op. They do not document local couch co-op or split-screen. Each player joins through the online session rather than sharing one machine and display.
Players share the same campaign run and work on the same island progression. The core loop remains fishing, defeating catches, earning money, improving equipment, completing NPC quests, and fighting bosses. Co-op changes how roles and risk are distributed, not the bait needed for story encounters.
No cross-platform claim is made here because the local material does not contain enough current evidence. Platform compatibility remains a separate question from lobby size. Friends should confirm that they are using the same supported platform and game version before organizing the lobby.
How to Host a Multiplayer Game
Select Host Game from the main menu and configure the session. Use Invite Only when the group should be limited to directly invited friends, or Public when players should be able to join through the broader session flow. Save before changing a running session’s server settings because Game8 says applying the change requires a restart.

For an Invite Only lobby, send Steam invitations to the intended players. For a public session, friends can join through the Steam friend list or use a Lobby Code. Agree which save is hosting before the group begins, so progression does not become split between accidental sessions.
When attempting a group beyond the store-listed four-person size, confirm that every player is on the same current version and check the available lobby slots in game. A mismatch can make a reported feature look unavailable. This is a practical compatibility check, not a claim about a specific undocumented error code.
How to Join a Lobby
For a public lobby, open the Steam friend list, right-click the host, and join the match, or paste the supplied Lobby Code into the session interface and use the join-by-ID control. For a private lobby, wait for the host’s Steam invitation and accept the Play Game prompt. These are the two documented join paths.
If the session does not appear, verify session type, code accuracy, version parity, and whether the host restarted after changing server settings. The collected troubleshooting source mentions session creation failures but does not provide a confirmed universal fix. Avoid publishing speculative network or firewall instructions on this page.
What Co-op Changes
Teammates can revive downed players, allowing a boss attempt to continue as long as someone remains active and can reach the body safely. Video 4 shows revives repeatedly preventing a full reset, while also showing that a poorly timed revive can down the rescuer. Wait for the boss to move away before committing.
More players can fish, sell catches, and attack simultaneously. That can speed ordinary progression and make short boss damage windows more productive. However, the group still needs the correct Carrot, Tuna, Fish Bucket, or other story item; extra firepower does not bypass quest logic.
The Nerdschalk source supplies exact multiplayer boss-health scaling figures, but the other collected sources do not independently confirm them for current versions or expanded lobbies. Those numbers are therefore excluded rather than presented as current facts. Expect encounter difficulty to be version-sensitive and prepare gear instead of relying on a fixed table.
Useful Co-op Roles
Assign a driver and a Radar navigator during boat travel. The navigator watches the colored marker while the driver keeps the boat moving, avoiding the solo need to stop for each check. The map guide lists each destination landmark.
Assign a quest-item carrier for Empty Beer Can, Carrot, Tuna, Bowhead Whale, and boss trophies. The transcripts contain several accidental eats, sales, and casts that become much more likely when no one owns the handoff. State clearly when a creature must remain on the ground or in a particular inventory.
For combat, mix roles when the island supports it. On Island 4, a Sniper Rifle player can focus on Albatross while an SMG player handles sustained damage and nearby threats. On Volcano, multiple upgraded rifles help, but at least one player should preserve food and revive safely.
Common Multiplayer Mistakes
Do not start the boss while players are shopping, upgrading, or recovering equipment. Unique bait can trigger immediately after a cast, leaving half the team out of position. Use a ready check before Carrot, Tuna placement, or Fish Bucket.
Do not crowd a downed teammate inside poison, lava, or a charge lane. Let the targeted player pull the boss away, then send one rescuer. Several players attempting the same revive can turn one down into a wipe.
Do not interpret a four-player video as proof that expanded lobbies are impossible, and do not interpret an old mod as proof that a mod is still required. The collected sources conflict, so use the current Steam listing as the dependable baseline and verify larger groups in game.
Solo vs Co-op
The full story can be completed solo, so multiplayer is not mandatory. Solo offers simpler coordination and full control of money and inventory, while co-op adds revives, simultaneous fishing, and role specialization. The beginner guide includes solo navigation advice.
For a normal social run, co-op reduces the cost of individual mistakes because the team can recover a downed player. For version-sensitive speed achievements, the source set is incomplete and internally conflicting about skips, so no current fastest-party recommendation is made.
