How to Fish First Boss: How to Beat Spider Crab

The short answer

Spider Crab is the first boss in How to Fish. Give a Beer to the Lighthouse Keeper, equip the returned Empty Beer Can on the Crab Fishing Rod, and cast to summon it. Dodge sideways when it charges, attack two or three times while it is dizzy, and repeat before the white escape bar empties; return its meat to receive the boat keys.

Where to Find the First Boss

The encounter happens on Island 1, the Lighthouse starting area. The keeper explains that a long-legged creature has been stealing his beer and asks you to remove it. You cannot simply find Spider Crab wandering on land; the quest-specific Empty Beer Can summons it from the water.

Complete enough of the opening fishing loop to buy the required items. Gather clams, purchase the Crab Fishing Rod, catch and sell crabs or shrimp, and save for a practical melee weapon and the Beer. The beginner guide covers those opening purchases without detouring into optional systems.

How to Get the Empty Beer Can

Buy a Beer from the Lighthouse shop and hand it to the keeper. He drinks it and returns the Empty Beer Can, which becomes a special lure. Multiple written guides and all relevant playthroughs agree on this exchange.

Do not consume the Beer yourself. Several video players make that mistake or hesitate over how to empty it, losing money and delaying another attempt. The reliable interaction is Beer to keeper, returned empty can to rod, then cast when ready.

If Spider Crab escapes or defeats you, another attempt may require repeating part of this preparation depending on what remains in your inventory. Recover dropped equipment before buying replacements. Keep enough ordinary bait available to rebuild cash without gambling.

A Knife is the clearest solo recommendation. PC Gamer, Mobalytics, Sportskeeda, and the transcripts all show bare-hand attempts becoming dangerous, while a melee weapon makes each stun window meaningful. Brass Knuckles can work, especially with several co-op attackers, but Knife is the safer default.

Restore health and hunger before casting. Leave a clam or another food item accessible for recovery, but do not stop in front of the boss to eat. Move the fight onto clear ground where the charge direction is easy to read and where the boss cannot immediately slip back toward water.

You do not need firearms for this first encounter. Saving money for the next island is useful, but only after the boss is under control. Buy the Radar once the fight is finished rather than replacing a required weapon with it before the fight.

Spider Crab Attack Pattern

At close to medium range, Spider Crab charges directly toward the player. Step sideways just before contact, and the missed charge leaves it dizzy for a short time. This stun is the intended damage opportunity described by both Mobalytics and Sportskeeda.

If you run too far away, it can switch to harder-to-control leaps. Stay close enough to invite a charge without standing directly in front of it. Once it recovers, create space and prepare to dodge again instead of trying to finish an uninterrupted combo.

The white bar below its health is an escape timer. If it empties first, Spider Crab leaves and the encounter must be restarted. Safe pressure matters: use every stun, but do not trade several claw hits for one extra attack.

Step-by-Step Fight Strategy

  1. Equip the Knife, restore health and hunger, and place food in a reachable slot.
  2. Equip the Empty Beer Can on the Crab Fishing Rod and cast from open shoreline.
  3. Face Spider Crab at a controlled distance and wait for the charge.
  4. Dodge sideways rather than backing up in a straight line.
  5. Move behind or beside the dizzy boss and land two or three Knife hits.
  6. Back away before it recovers and repeat while watching the escape bar.
  7. Collect the dropped meat and return it to the Lighthouse Keeper.

The transcripts support patience more strongly than brute force. Both solo and multiplayer groups fail when everyone crowds the boss and continues attacking through its recovery, then win after using the dazed window. Their exact hit counts and health observations vary, so the guide uses the repeated two-or-three-hit recommendation from the written fight guides.

Solo vs Co-op

Solo players should prioritize predictable charges and avoid losing the Knife in deep water. If downed or killed, the recovery trip can become more costly than the original purchase. Keep the fight centered on land and resist chasing the final sliver of health through a dangerous attack.

Co-op groups can revive one another and deal more damage during each stun. Spread out so a charge does not hit several players, and let the targeted player focus on dodging while the others move into position. The multiplayer transcripts show revives helping, but also show the fight becoming chaotic when every player stands in the same path.

Assign one player to secure the meat after victory. Eating or selling it before the keeper’s handoff can break the immediate progression flow. The current official lobby information is covered separately in the max players guide.

Common Mistakes

Summoning too early is the largest avoidable error. Bare fists, low health, and no food turn a simple pattern fight into repeated grinding. Prepare the Knife before the Empty Beer Can is attached.

Do not retreat across the whole island. Excess distance encourages leap attacks and wastes the escape timer. Circle at controlled range, dodge the charge, and return for the next safe opening.

Do not remain in front of the crab after it wakes. A final greedy hit can lead to several claw attacks and a dropped weapon. The fight becomes consistent once every recovery window is treated as a hard signal to disengage.

Reward and Next Step

Collect Spider Crab meat and give it to the Lighthouse Keeper to complete the quest. He provides the boat keys, allowing you to leave Island 1. Buy the Radar before departure and follow its new marker toward Forest Island.

Continue with the full walkthrough or review all weapons before the Giant Piranha route. The boss hub shows which later fights are required and which are optional boss catches. Keep the Radar available so the first successful boss immediately leads into the next island.
